Junior Software Engineer

This position is needed to build out a new team to enable Twilio to better support our global customers using Video and Voice in their solutions. As a Software Engineer on this team you will participate in all phases of the software development life cycle which includes requirements gathering with Product Managers, technical design, estimations, sprint planning, coding, testing, deployments and on-call support. This engineer will own, operate and maintain their teams’ services in a distributed production environment, employing Agile methodologies to continuously deliver value to customers.

In this role, you’ll:

  • Design and implement real-time services with high throughput and low latency requirements, verify, deploy and operationalize them
  • Work closely with stakeholders to understand customer needs and, devise and deliver, simple, robust and scalable solutions
  • Be comfortable expressing thoughts and ideas as detailed prose and use it as an effective means to collaborate with leads, architects and cross functional teams
  • Embrace the challenge of scaling a complex distributed platform with points of presence globally, each one concerned with high availability, high reliability, high throughput, low latency, and media fidelity
  • Figure out novel ways of solving customer problems for Video and Voice channels
  • Eager to learn, deepen and grow your knowledge and experience of scalable, distributed systems

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related engineering field
  • Strong Computer Science fundamentals not limited to data structures, algorithms, operating systems, and distributed systems
  • 0-1 years of hands-on experience in school or professionally working with distributed applications environment on JVM based technologies
  • Able to demonstrate proficiency in at least one language, web stack and framework
  • Able to learn quickly and be proactive in gaining knowledge needed to work on scalable, distributed back end services
  • Able to work well in a team setting and both highly motivated and motivating

Desired:

  • Knowledge and experience working with the webRTC protocol
  • Knowledge  and experience working with SIP protocol
  • Experience with scaling distributed back end systems
  • Experience using SQL/NoSQL databases and caching technologies
  • Exposure to cloud technologies such as AWS, GCP, OpenStack or Azure

Location

This role will be based in our Tallinn, Estonia office, or remote in Estonia.

Travel

We prioritize connection and opportunities to build relationships with our customers and each other. For this role, you may be required to travel occasionally to participate in project or team in-person meetings.
